Denmark, S.C. - 1:48 a.m. April 7, a Santee officer spotted a car traveling 49 m.p.h. in and 35 m.p.h. zone and stopped the car of excessive speed.

When the driver was confronted he said to the officer that he was coming from a church charity event. As the officer continued to talk to the man he noticed a alcoholic odor from the car and asked the driver to exit the car.

When the driver exited the cart the officer saw a gin bottle in the drivers back pocket and also through a pat-down search found a 3.1 gram bag of cocaine in the driver's watch pocket.

The man was taken to jail and charged with possession of cocaine and driving with an unlawful concentration of alcohol.

Drake Comments On Chris Brown

Denmark, S.C. - This morning I was listening to the radio and I heard a segment where they were discussing Drake and Chris Brown's beef between each other for their relations to R&B singer Rihanna. Drake made comments suggesting that Chris Brown is still salty about the brief relationship between Drake and Rihanna after the car incident between she and Brown.

I believe that this feud had carried on TOO long. Brown and Rihanna are obviously back together and Drake shouldn't have anything to do with their relationship. The whole going back and further thing is nothing but something for the media to grab and hold on to to make a story about and cause more controversy.

Leo Reginald Smith Comes Back To Speak To Voorhees College

Denmark, S.C. - Last Thursday in Massachusetts Hall, Mr. Leo Reginald Smith, a former students and graduate of Voorhees College came back to give a presentation on Emotional Intelligence.

He was able to relate to the crowd the importance of emotional control. He interacted well with crowd to give different examples on not letting any situation or anyone to get the best of you.

He used different techniques such as pretending to throw water on audience members and bothering audience members personal belongings to show that in an instinct someone could get the best of you but if you take a second to "Pause" and think for a second about the outcome of the situation a person can consider what would be the right reaction.

Terry Brown Has A Presentation At Voorhees College

Denmark, S.C. - On April 11, Mr. Terry Brown, a graduate of Voorhees College and representative of Marriott Hotels, came to speak to Voorhees College. Introduced by Voorhees student Elroy Johnson, Brown spoke of not only his trials and tribulations but also have students tips on how to make it t through college and having a plan after graduation.

He spoke of some much needed keys on the road to success. A couple for example is that he explained that fact that one needs to surround themselves with a "true circle of friends." He said that one needs that true circle of friends that will tell you the truth about a situation whether you like it or not. With this he also explained that a person doesn't be afraid to lose people asking the way because you will gain some will needed people as well.

Another tip he gave was find an affirmation. He said a person should define success on their own terms. A person should not try to find assurance from another person but instead have the confidence within themselves to assure themselves that they are doing the right thing for them.

Brown's presentation was a very interesting and exciting one. With his great deliver he was handle to captivate the crowd with his comedic antics and sayings.

Detention Center Isn't Safe Enough

Denmark, S.C. - In a recently published story, it reads that when the Orangeburg County Detention Center was inspected on January 7, there were several problems detected. There were numerous problems with the staffing levels, furnishings and operations. Although there are problems, County Administrator Harold Young said that the county is working on the correction of some of the problems stated in the report. He is quoted saying they are making the necessary steps to improve their facility.

I think that improvement is necessary but spending a lot of money on a detention center is not sensible. That is well needed money that could be used to benefit more important efforts to improve the community. I do believe that the facility needs to be maintain to stop from inmates being injured but I think its unheard of to actually spend a lot of money on that.

Is Rick Ross Promoting Rape?

Denmark, S.C. - Rick Ross has been criticized in the media lately. Not for him with his shirt off at any awards show performance or him supposing to be attacked by some gangbangers at his shows. This time is is in the media for a lyric of his on the Rocko single, U.O.E.N.O. On this song he said a line saying, "Molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it....Took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it."

He has apologize publicly for this lyric. Ross is quoted saying, "For me to suggest in any way that harm and violation be brought to a woman is one of my biggest mistakes." Ross is also feeling the punishment for this statement with Reebok dropping him from their endorsement time. Although the rapper has made the statement of being a musician is "a great responsibility" and that his choice of words in the song "does not reflect my true heart.", he said what he said and not has to suffer the consquences of the his slip of the lip.

Good Boy Turned Bad - Are You A Belieber?

Denmark, S.C. - Many things have been said about Justin Beiber since his shoot from Youtube sensation to "Beiber Fever" superstardom. During his time in the American he as really made an impact on the music scene and he had many raving about his talents and potential. But lately this hasn't been the case. The comments have gone from raving about his talents to raving about how he is becoming an out of control youth in the media. With many cases of him showing out in the media, not just reporters and journalists, but also fans and supporters have complained of how much he is changing and how it seems that the limelight is catching up with him.

The most recently published story was about Beiber visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. He wrote something in the guessbook stating, "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a Belieber."

The star meant nothing disrepectful with the statement. Anne Frank had a collage on her wall full of celebrities of her time given to her by her father. The star simply meant that he was hoping that she was one of his fans if the time was different.

But this is coming after many allegations that he is becoming an out of control teenage star. With incidents such as her altercation with poparazzi in London, being booed by this fans for arriving late to a concert and him throwing up on stage in Arizona.

I believe that the superstardom may be catching up with him. He had a VERY fast come up and that has exposed him to a lot in such a little time. Especially because he is now hitting that age where many childhood stars grow into that stage where they are trying to find out what they are going to do with their career seeing as though they can't play the child's role anymore. I believe with him being in this atage in is playing the bad boy role because its something that will keep him in the news and keep his style evolving.

Beiber is not the first to do this. Many children stars have done the same. For example, Chris Brown, Bow Wow and Lindsey Lohan just for a few but there have been countless others. Although he is taking this route to transform his image and open up his audience, I do believe that if he lets the lifestyle take over him it will end VERY badly. The same thing that has and is happening with Chris Brown will happen to him and that won't be good at all for his future image.

It’s NBA Playoff Time Again! Who Do You Have To Win It All? (Written April 8, 2013)

Denmark, S.C. – With the playoffs 12 days away and playoff berths being solidified, there are as in every year many playoff expectations and predictions. Many people are scrambling to see the playoff brackets and make their assumptions of what team is going to put up or shut up after a season that has been no less than a thriller. With just as many ups that there have been downs, teams are gearing up for what seems to be an “up for grabs” opportunity for the National Basketball Association’s number one spot, NBA Champions.

A team that loves the chance that earned for the playoffs is the Los Angeles Clippers. Defeating and completing the sweep of their home town rivals the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday and clinching the Pacific Division Championship, they are on track to make some noise in the playoffs this year. Just as the Miami Heat or the Los Angeles Lakers, last year the Clippers had problems finding the identity of the newly acquired pieces to their puzzle. (Chris Paul, Jamaal Crawford, and their bench) Feeling the effect of a total domination losing the series 4 game to none to the San Antonia Spurs, the Clippers are handling business early so that it is all downhill to the championship in the playoffs.

Another team that has been red hot heading into the playoff has been the New York Knicks. Beating the Oklahoma City Thunder yesterday 125 – 120, they are showing no signs of cooling off. Carmelo Anthony and his band of offensive gurus put up many shots but in a games where Anthony scores 36 points, J.R. Smith scores 22 points and three players off the bench are in double digit scoring against the defensive OKC there are many who can complain. And they also did very well on the boards as they also out rebounded the Thunder 41 – 37. With them being able to adjust and beat a heavily defensive team at their own game shows that with the playoffs right around the corner, they are making the necessary moves to make sure that this year’s playoffs doesn’t end like last year’s lost the Miami Heat in the second round four games to one.

As but definitely not least are the reigning NBA champs, the Miami Heat. With their record at 60-16, they are sitting in total control as they are one of the teams picked to dominate the playoffs once again and be right back in the NBA Champion. Improving the allocation of the ball between their three superstars and adding role playing pieces the sky is the limit for the Miami Heat. The Heat made history recording the second longest winning streak of all team 27 and are set for the playoffs with the mission of securing another NBA Championship.

As the season draws to a close, the NBA playoffs are shaping to not only be a very interesting one but also a history making one. Many new faces and many of the same but as it seems it is guaranteed to be a shocker. I’ve made mine. Have you made your picks yet? Check out that bracket and make your own predictions.

Voorhees College Founder's Day Convocation

Denmark, S.C. - This morning, April 11, 2013, the 116th Annual Founder's Day Convocation was held in a commemorative effort to show appreciation for the hard work that was put into the founding of Voorhees College and also the work being put in daily.

Held in the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center, it was an all college assembly which the 8th President of Voorhees College Dr .Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr., was a momentous event. Beginning with the marching in of the faculty and staff dubbed in their graduation gowns and stoles. Reverend Dr. James Yarsiah, Voorhees' Chaplain/Vicor, followed with the invocation for the ceremony. Darius Snow, SGA President came next with his greetings to the college's faculty, staff, and students as a whole and after a selection from the Voorhees College choir, President Sellers gave the introduction of the speaker.

The speaker of this year's convocation was the honorable LaDoris G. Harris, Director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington D.C. Harris spoke of how important it is to value and education. She stated her success in order to explain that through her value of education and her hard work she was able to do things that not only her counter parts have not done but things that she didn't even see for herself. With her being appointed to her position by President Barack O'Bama, she is the first women to be put in the position that she is in and the first woman to blaze the path that she took. She expressed that fact that students should not just simply attend college but find the purpose of they are in college and do everything in there power to achieve the most out the opportunity.

Following the program was the walk to Mrs. Elizabeth Evelyn Wright's grave sight. Mrs. Wright was a black woman in her early twenties who, in spite of betrayals, arson, jealousies, threats of violence, and weariness from wandering, preserved and founded Voorhees College. The faculty, staff, and students walked together to decorate her grave sight with roses in honor of her hard work. Faced with the battle of carrying out her dream, she endured many obstacles. For this 116 years later is is still remembered and gloried for her committment.

This year's Voorhees College Convocation was a memorable one. And it was only right to have such a prominent and successful female figure come to speak to the students in honor of the founding of Voorhees College seeing as though a successful female founded the college. As a another academic year draws closer to an end, it only goes to show that something that was once a twinkle in someone's eye turned out to be a everlasting flame. Mrs. Elizabeth Evelyn Wright's dream still lives on.

Presidential Inauguration 2013

Monday, January 21, the president of the United States was Mr. Barack O'Bama was once against sworn into position. Although it was a pretty cold day it was indeed a glorious event.

Along with many other historical staples such as Mrs. Eavers speaking and the using of MLK Jr.'s and Abe Lincoln's Bibles, President O'bama's speech was nothing short of standard. Acknowledging many U.S. issues, gay rights, immigration, etc., his speech was historical as such because this was the first time that these issues have been spoke of as no issue but as something that needed to be embraced as our country makes it advance into the future. He explain that we are all equal as people and needed to be treated as such.

Topped off with performances from Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce,  the inauguration was a very inspirational event. I believe the next four years will speak wonders for the U.S. President O'Bama has a vision for America and I am glad to say I will be able to witness it.
